London: 21st Feb 2008 - As the cold weather grips the nation, the Arctic Monkey’s have created the quickest trend after wearing flat caps on the red carpet on Wednesday night.

The very traditional British look was fitting to the occasion, and saw the northern heroes take home Best British Group and Album awards, but music fans watching last night have hot footed it to the stores today and ASDA has found that sales of its traditional flat caps have gone up by 75% compared to Wednesday.

Other celebrities to also sport this look have included Alex James from Blur, Guy Ritchie and Brad Pitt, but it is Sheffield music stars that have caught the nations imagination.

Traditionally worn by the British gentry the Arctic Monkeys have shown that their everyman appeal, appeals to the George at ASDA customer.

Notes for Editors

History:

The style can be traced back to 14th century Ireland or even England, said to have probably emerged from the French 'bonnet'.

The caps were almost universally worn in the 19th century by working class men throughout the British Isles, and versions in finer cloth were also

considered to be suitable casual countryside wear for upper-class English men.

In British popular culture

In British popular culture, the flat cap is associated with older working class men, especially those in northern England, as personified by Fred Dibnah and comic strip anti-hero Andy Capp, and in the East End of London as demonstrated by Eastenders' Jim Branning and Only Fools and Horses' Del-Boy Trotter.
