BANGERS AND CASH!

ASDA customers can feed the family for less than £1.60

BANGERS and mash are firmly back on the menu as families look for ways to beat the credit crunch.

ASDA has seen overall sales of its own brand Smartprice sausages and bacon rise by a massive 48.2%, with sales of the range’s gammon also increasing by a whopping 56%.

And, while a customer at Gordon Ramsay’s gastro pub The Devonshire will have to fork out £13 for sausages and gravy plus an extra £3.50 for mash, ASDA customers can feed the whole family a bangers, mash and carrot meal for less than £1.60.

A 2.5kilo bag of Smartprice potatoes is just 73p, which is the same price as last year, while a 1.5kilo bag of carrots is 68p. To further help Britain’s families, ASDA has this week cut the price of Smartprice sausages to a fantastic 2p each. An eight pack of sausages has been reduced from 54p to just 16p.

This means bangers, mash and carrots can be served up for a family-of-four’s tea for £1.57.

ASDA’s sausage buyer Jenny Liggat said: “Families are feeling the impact of the credit crunch in their pockets. Food prices have increased but ASDA is committed to continually offering customers great value products at an everyday low price.

“Our Smartprice ranges are very popular with customers and we thought the idea of a 2p sausage would be welcome news in the aisles. All of our Smartprice ranges contain no artificial colours or flavourings.”

The humble banger is also proving popular across the board. Total sales across Smartprice, ASDA own brand and ASDA Extra Special ranges have seen a year on year increase of 25%.

Sausages have been around for centuries – the name comes from the Latin salsus, meaning salted. Bangers and mash are thought to have been first put on the menu by British pubs shortly after the first world war.
